Costa Rica, Canada play 1-1 tie in Gold Cup

Houston (Texas), July 12 (IANS) Costa Rica and Canada national football teams played a 1-1 tie in a Concacaf Gold Cup Group A match at BBVA Compass stadium here.

Canada's Alphonso Davies, a 16-year-old soccer prodigy, opened the scoring with a goal in the 26th minute on Tuesday, reports Efe.

Costa Rica tied it up at 1-1 in the 42nd minute on a header off a rebound by Francisco Calvo. Davies gave his teammates a scare in the 69th minute when he twisted an ankle and had to leave the game.

The teams battled for the rest of the match in what ended up turning into a defensive struggle before a crowd of less than 3,000 people.

In other Gold Cup action on Tuesday, Honduras and French Guiana played to a 0-0 tie in the early match at BBVA Compass Stadium.

On Thursday, defending Gold Cup champion Mexico will play Jamaica, the team it beat for the title in 2015, in Group C action at Sports Authority Field in Denver.
