Ashok Tamang, a resident of Darjeeling, received grievous injuries after he was allegedly baton-charged in Darjeeling on July 8 during a clash between the state police and agitators demanding a separate Gorkhaland.
Tamang was admitted to Manipal CRH Hospital in Sikkim's Tadong town.
"The patient succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. His body is being taken to his residence in the Louis Jubilee Complex in Darjeeling district," a hospital source said.
Three persons died and a policeman received injuries in a sudden escalation of violence last Saturday, with pro-Gorkhaland activists engaging in widespread arson and vandalism, targeting a railway station, police outposts and government offices.
The GJM, a local unrecognised political party spearheading the separate Gorkhaland agitation, accused the police of shooting down their activists without any provocation. The police, however, denied they were to blame.
The picturesque hill town of Darjeeling and the surrounding hill districts have been on the boil for the past one month over the renewed demand of a separate state of Gorkhaland to be carved out of the north Bengal hills.
The GJM-sponsored indefinite shutdown has crippled normal life in the hills for the past 27 days.
