Mamata’s GST opposition now a political decision: Minister

Kolkata, June 29 (IANS) Union Minister of State for Finance Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday said the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress' decision to stay away from the midnight Parliament session on June 30 for the GST roll-out was political.

"Trinamool Congress had supported the GST in both houses of Parliament. Their opposition now is due to political reasons," he said here.

West Bengal, being a consuming state, would be benefited immensely in the indirect tax regime and the state should withdraw its protest, Meghwal said.

The GST Council has been considering all the representations with a positive outlook, he said, while responding to a query that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had alleged medicines were not available in many places.

The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is part of the ease of doing business, Meghwal said.

Refuting the allegations of traders that infrastructure is not ready, he said: "The entire system for GST is absolutely ready as we had run trials successfully. We are fully prepared."
