One more dies of sunstroke in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, April 25 (IANS) One more person died of sunstroke in Odisha as the mercury soared above 40 degrees Celsius in 17 towns in the state, authorities said on Tuesday.

The office of the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) said the heat wave conditions that prevail across the state have taken the death toll to three.

The three deaths were reported from Angul, Bolangir and Bargarh, while suspected cases of death due to sunstroke climbed to 20, said the SRC office.

"We are inquiring into the alleged sunstroke deaths," said an SRC official.

Western Odisha town Titlagarh recorded the highest temperature at 45.5 degrees Celsius while Angul recorded 44.7 degrees followed by Talcher at 44.4, Sundargarh at 44 and Bhawanipatna at 43.8 degrees.

The capital city Bhubaneswar registered 39.8 degrees Celsius while Cuttack sizzled at 40.8 degrees Celsius.

Schools remained closed from Tuesday following a directive of the state government. The private and government schools will reopen on June 18.
