Alcohol, tobacco consumption falls in Russia

Moscow, April 17 (IANS) Russia recorded a decrease in alcohol and tobacco consumption in 2016, the media reported on Monday.

According to consumer rights watchdog Rospotrebnadzor report, the number of patients diagnosed with alcoholism fell by 36 per cent and the number of alcoholics registered in treatment-and-prophylactic establishments decreased by 24 per cent.

Moreover, tobacco consumption decreased by 39 per cent among the adult population, Xinhua news agency reported.

In 2011, restrictions on selling alcohol were strengthened. The list of places where alcohol selling was prohibited became longer, and a ban on alcohol selling was imposed between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. of the next day.

At the moment, Rospotrebnadzor is considering a new version of the anti-tobacco concept that equates e-cigarettes with the traditional ones.
