Modi urges students to compete with themselves

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday advised students to inculcate the habit of competing with themselves rather than with others.

In his 'Mann Ki Baat' radio programme, Modi said while competition with others gives birth to jealousy and ego, competition with self leads to introspection, encouragement and confidence.

"If you compete with someone, you will either feel you are better than them, worse than them or just as good as them."

He added if one competed with himself, they become better and gain confidence.

"So I advise you all to compete with yourself rather than competing with others."

Modi also urged students not to run after marks but focus on skill and knowledge. He said "marks and marksheets have limited use".

"The pressure of marks and marksheets stops us sometimes from going in the right direction. If you run after marks, you will try to find the shortest path."
