European president warns Trump election risks US-EU relations

Luxembourg City, Nov 12 (IANS) European Union Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has warned that Donald Trump's election risks upsetting bilateral relations between the two, media reports said.

"The election of Trump poses the risk of upsetting intercontinental relations in their foundation and in their structure," the Independent quoted Juncker as saying at at a conference in Luxembourg, Europe.

"We will need to teach the president-elect what Europe is and how it works," he added.

His blunt remarks reflected widespread shock among Europeans at the election of Trump, who had praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and questioned the principle of collective defence in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

He also recalled a statement made by Trump, in which he seemed to think that Belgium, the country that headquarters EU and Nato, was a city.

"I think we will waste two years before Mr. Trump tours the world he does not know," he said.

Junkers comments come in contrast to reactions of other leaders in EU who have said they look forward to working with the next Republican president.

Trump shockingly defeated Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the US presidential elections on November 8 and will succeed President Barack Obama on January 20, 2017.
