In May, the 30-year-old woman Ly Thi N paid her friend Doan Van D 1,660 pounds ($2,196) to maim her and then pretend to have found her by a railway level crossing in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, Daily Mail reported on Wednesday.
After cutting off her limbs, Doan Van D had called an ambulance, saying he had found the injured woman, who he claimed was a stranger.
However, the detectives later became suspicious of the man's story when they looked into Ly Thi N's personal affairs.
Her business was struggling and she was short of cash before the 'accident', Thanhiennews website was cited as saying.
The woman eventually confessed to police.
