EC bars top cop from leaving station of duty

Kolkata, May 4 (IANS) Ahead of the sixth and final phase of the West Bengal assembly polls on Thursday, the Election Commission has asked the West Bengal government to ensure that IPS officer Bharati Ghosh does not leave her station of duty till the conclusion of polls, officials said.

Before the polls began on April 4, Ghosh was transferred from her post of Officer on Special Duty (Left Wing Extremism) to the slot of Special Superintendent of the Criminal Investigation Department (Kolkata).

More than 60 police officers were shunted during the long drawn out poll season that began after the notification in early March.

A fresh order for removal of the officer in charge at Sabang police station in West Midnapore came in on Wednesday, officials said.

The move follows a complaint lodged by the Left Front and Congress alliance against the police officer for allegedly failing to curb post-poll violence.

As many as 25 constituencies in East Midnapore and Cooch Behar will go to polls on Thursday.
